It seems that protecting the environment is on everyone’s mind these days. In fact, one of the most common questions I get from customers at my greenhouse is if there are any natural pest control methods that really work. Avoiding the use of chemically laden pesticides is a top priority for many, especially those concerned about their children and pets being exposed.

My answer to the question is a definitive “Yes!” … I have first-hand experience with eco-friendly pest control solutions that really do deter nuisance critters such as deer, rabbits and groundhogs.

Health Risks for Animals Around Plants

Those rabbits, squirrels and other critters that hang around your backyard can do much more damage than just eating your plants, flowers and vegetables. Some of these wild animals can potentially be carrying disease that could threaten your health, as well as that of your family and pets.

Taking appropriate steps to deter these nuisance animals from entering your yard or garden can greatly reduce your exposure to animal… Read More

Unlike humans, animals don’t have the luxury of curling up with a good book next to the fireplace on a cold, rainy or snowy day. Although many animals are blessed with fur coats and other natural features that protect them from the elements, it doesn’t mean they enjoy being wet or cold any more than you do.

Who hasn’t, at one time or another, discovered a cat sleeping underneath a car on a chilly or stormy day, taking advantage of the heat of the engine as well as the shelter it provides? And you may have owned or observed a pet that is absolutely terrified by the sound of thunder!

Pets and Natural Disasters

As we have seen most recently with Hurricane Sandy, natural disasters, such as hurricanes or tornadoes, can… Read More

How to Help Animals after a Disaster like Sandy

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many people have returned to homes devastated by floods, extreme wind and rain, and power outages. As people evacuated, the primary concern was keeping their families safe. Therefore, many in the danger zone had to make a tough decision—to try to bring the family pets along as they escaped the hurricane, or leave their animals behind and hope for the best.

Pets Left Behind

New York City officials were very proactive in the effort to save both people and pets before the storm—as people evacuated, shelters were encouraged to accept new animals, and transit stops were told to allow all pets in the days leading up to the hurricane’s strike. But many animals were still left behind out of desperation, pressure, or neglect.… Read More
