What Do I Need to Start a Garden?

What Do I Need to Start a Garden?

What do you need in order to start a garden? That’s a question I hear on a daily basis at the greenhouse. Fortunately, with the help of a few gardening and wild animal control tips for beginners, just about anyone can develop a green thumb and create a beautiful, bountiful garden that is the envy of your friends and neighbors.

Whether your goal is to undertake gardening as a relaxing hobby or to supplement your diet with healthy fruits and vegetables, all it takes is a little bit of know-how and a willingness to get your hands (or gardening gloves) dirty! It’s also important to know how to keep away critters that can destroy the fruits (and vegetables!) of your labor, which I’ll cover a little later in this post.

Common Garden Pests Identification

Common Garden Pests Identification

It’s inevitable — wherever there are gardens, there will also be pests! Even well-tended gardens are likely to experience a pest problem at one time or another.

Pests can cause plenty of damage, from nibbling on your plants and vegetables to creating holes and tunnels all over your property. How Weather Affects Animals in Your Yard

Unlike humans, animals don’t have the luxury of curling up with a good book next to the fireplace on a cold, rainy or snowy day. Although many animals are blessed with fur coats and other natural features that protect them from the elements, it doesn’t mean they enjoy being wet or cold any more than you do.

Who hasn’t, at one time or another, discovered a cat sleeping underneath a car on a chilly or stormy day, taking advantage of the heat of the engine as well as the shelter it provides? And you may have owned or observed a pet that is absolutely terrified by the sound of thunder!

Pets and Natural Disasters

As we have seen most recently with Hurricane Sandy, natural disasters, such as hurricanes or tornadoes, can… Read More

Certifying Your Yard or Garden as a Wildlife Habitat

Certifying Your Yard or Garden as a Wildlife Habitat

If you live in a rural or remote part of the country, your backyard is probably different from those found in an urban or suburban environment. For one thing, you’re probably closer to the habitats of many different types of wild animals that are eager to treat your property as an extension of their home environment.

A great way to establish an environment that both you and your four-legged or winged visitors can share in peace is to create a Certified Wildlife Habitat® in your backyard or garden. Certification can be obtained from the National Wildlife Federation, an organization devoted to providing safe habitats for wildlife that is gradually being squeezed out of their natural environments.

Benefits of Certification

As an animal control professional, I have… Read More
