How to Deter Stray Cats

Stray and feral cats are a growing problem in the United States. In fact, the Feral Cat Coalition has estimated more than 60 million stray cats exist. The U.S. Department of Agriculture projects an additional 5 million domestic cats are abandoned annually. That’s a lot of cats! Not only is it considered inhumane treatment when you fail to prevent or control a stray cat population, but conservationists also argue that feral cats contribute greatly to the population reduction of songbirds and other endangered birds.

So, how can you help deter those stray cats from you area? There are a lot of home remedies (some surprising) out there to help you keep cats out of your yard and garden areas. Some people swear by planting herbs that cats don’t like to be around. These include lavender, rue, geranium, absinthe, lemon-thyme, rosemary and pennyroyal (among others). You’ve Got it Trapped…Now What?

You’ve Got it Trapped…Now What?

So you’ve bought some live traps and have successfully caught your first critter!

…Now what?

It can be surprising when you discover your live trap worked and has an animal inside it. Knowing how to relocate the animal successfully is essential for the safety of you and the animal you trapped.

Have a plan

Contact your local Humane Society or state game commission to determine the lawful way to release each type of wild animal. Ideally, you should have this plan in place before you trap the animal. Leaving an animal in the trap for extended periods of time can be harmful because it may injure itself trying to escape.

Always relocate the animal to an appropriate area, away from cities and houses, but in a location where it may find shelter, food and water.

By identifying the perpetrator, you’ll know what kind of repellent to use, such as rabbit repellent or deer repellent products. There are even helpful deer repellent reviews available online to help you decide.

One of the best ways to tell what animal you have on your property is to inspect the damage.

Rabbits leave clean, angled cuts as they eat leaves. Rabbits also strip bark and chew leaves off young trees. They can only reach about 2 ½ feet up the tree, though. If you’ve got damage on trees above 2 ½ feet, it may be deer. They’re known to stand on their hind legs to get to tree leaves. Also, deer lack incisors, so they … Read More

How to Keep Squirrels out of your Garden

Image: thartz00

You probably don’t give much thought to a squirrel when you see one scurrying about in your backyard, but they are truly amazing little creatures. They can run at speeds up to 20 mph, and the positioning of their eyes allows them to see behind them. No chance of sneaking up on a squirrel! And if you ever wondered how a squirrel can find their stored goodies like nuts and acorns so easily, it’s because their memory actually increases by 15 percent during the winter.

The ideal habitat for squirrels is a forest filled with oak, beech and hickory trees that provide food and natural cover. Some squirrels live in nests that have been burrowed in the ground. Primarily vegetarians, squirrels like to feed on a variety of fruits, nuts, berries, mushrooms and the occasional insect.

Unfortunately for you, the homeowner, with this diet, suburban backyards can be … Read More
