What do you need in order to start a garden? That’s a question I hear on a daily basis at the greenhouse. Fortunately, with the help of a few gardening and wild animal control tips for beginners, just about anyone can develop a green thumb and create a beautiful, bountiful garden that is the envy of your friends and neighbors.

Whether your goal is to undertake gardening as a relaxing hobby or to supplement your diet with healthy fruits and vegetables, all it takes is a little bit of know-how and a willingness to get your hands (or gardening gloves) dirty! It’s also important to know how to keep away critters that can destroy the fruits (and vegetables!) of your labor, which I’ll cover a little later in this post.

Health Risks for Animals Around Plants

Those rabbits, squirrels and other critters that hang around your backyard can do much more damage than just eating your plants, flowers and vegetables. Some of these wild animals can potentially be carrying disease that could threaten your health, as well as that of your family and pets.

Animals are exposed to a wide variety of diseases in the wild. They can easily transmit these diseases to others by coming in contact with the vegetables you eat, by defecating or urinating in your yard, or through biting. What’s more, many animals also carry harmful parasites that can “jump” to pets and humans.

Taking appropriate steps to deter these nuisance animals from entering your yard or garden can greatly reduce your exposure to animal pests and diseases.

Hummingbirds are easily distinguishable from other bird species due to their small size and the unique humming sound they make when flapping their wings. In addition to being fun to watch as they deftly move from flower to flower in your yard, these tiny creatures provide a number of important benefits. In particular, their stature allows them to pollinate flowers that other birds cannot reach.

Creating a Hummingbird-Friendly Yard

One great way to get hummingbirds to stop by for a visit is to create a yard or garden filled with their favorite things. Hummingbirds love many different varieties of trees, shrubs and vines, including azalea, lantana, coral honeysuckle and morning glory, as these provide ideal nesting and shelter. They also are attracted to colorful perennial and annual flowers, such as cardinal flower, yucca, fuchsia and impatiens.

As with most birds, hummingbirds have no sense of smell, but … Read More

Growing Fruits and Berries while Keeping Unwanted Critters at Bay

Have your ever thought about how great it would be to have a backyard brimming with fresh fruits and berries? Perhaps you think creating a small backyard orchard would be a huge project that you’re not quite sure you’re ready to tackle.

By taking some time to learn more about the process, you can decide if growing fruits and berries is something that is worth your time and effort. Image: matthileo

Choosing the Right Location

As with any type of planting, choosing the right location for growing fruits and berries is a key to success. Your site should contain dry, loamy soil, as too much moisture facilitates the spread of disease. Planting in the middle of a slope can limit the harmful effects of frost. Be sure the site you choose is not in the shade, as fruits need plenty of sunlight to thrive.
